Celebrate Literacy Award
(Individual or Group)

Purpose

The purpose of the WSRA CELEBRATE LITERACY AWARD project is to honor a local individual, agency, or institution that has made significant contributions to literacy.The recognition will familiarize the public with literacy activities actually being carried out in your community, and that it will call attention to the work that is being done by the schools and the International Reading Association in the promotion of literacy as a "universal" concern.

An individual or group may be nominated by your council to receive the WSRA Celebrate Literacy Award. The INDIVIDUAL award will be presented to an individual who exemplifies efforts beyond his/her duties. The ORGANIZATION award will be presented to an organization which goes beyond what is expected of them in bringing literacy to individuals at any given level.

The following areas may be used for consideration when selecting an individual or organization as the literacy award recipient:

  1. Instructioinal leadership at any level
  2. Organizing local literacy programs
  3. Promoting support from the public
  4. Producing teaching materials or special media for literacy programs
  5. Carrying out research in fields related to literacy
  6. Carrying out special surveys of importance for literacy planning
  7. Providing young people the opportunity to help in literacy activities
  8. Carrying out informal education activities of a social, cultural, economic or political nature in which literacy and related literacy activities are included (radio and television programs, publications and press, library programs, and projects for special populations such as the handicapped and the aged)

Submitting a Nomination

Each council may submit a nomination for an individual and an organization. The following information should be submitted for each nomination.

  1. Complete the WSRA CELEBRATE LITERACY AWARD/Individual and/or the WSRA CELEBRATE LITERACY AWARD/Organization entry form.
  2. Describe the contributions to literacy on which the nomination is based. (See purpose above.) Not more than two pages.
  3. Describe the results of the contributions and their benefit to the community. (See purpose above.) Not more than two (2) pages.
