Who We Are

The Northeast Wisconsin Reading Council is a group of teachers and parents who meet to discuss books and techniques to support the field of literacy as advocates for good reading instruction.  We are associated with the Wisconsin State Reading Association and the International Reading Association.

Why you should join Northeast Wisconsin Reading Council?

We have had 6 years as a council following the discussion format.  The topic this year will be more reading, discussing the books that are mentioned in our calendar of events, and thinking of ways we can use these books with an emphasis on Classroom Intervention.  We welcome you to join us this year and hope that you will be able to attend the upcoming WSRA convention in 2008 with us.

The Northeast Reading Council News for 2007-2008

Our council is less formal and our meetings are more like the gathering of friends for professional sharing. Our council consists of 50+ members and we have about 25 at each of our 8 meetings. We discuss professional books as well as books that we will be using in our classrooms and additionally shared with our own children at home or wherever they can be taken and shared in our world. We shared a display and a bibliography of all books for each month and our itinerary is as follows:

In 2006-2007 we gathered books for New Orleans in conjunction with Diane Sherman and Crivitz Elementary, the Crivitz area Women’s Club, and other schools in the area. We received 115 boxes of books. One little boy donated his favorite book all dog-eared and well used and a little girl brought 4 books all tied up with ribbons.

This has been a fabulous year and we are looking forward to 2007-2008 with anticipation as we reach out to the community in an effort to make reading more interesting and fun for all involved.

The Northeast Reading Council does their meetings themselves therefore they keep the dues low. We meet in the Crivitz Elementary School Library from 5-7 p.m. and a college class is offered through U.W. Oshkosh which follows the meeting from 7-9 p.m.

We eat supper together, which we usually order in, and everyone contributes a small fee. This starts off the conversation.

Authors that we invite are local to Wisconsin so they’re glad to come and don’t charge! Our meetings are monthly so people get in the habit of coming, which keeps our council connected and looking forward to each month. We choose books to read, share, and have activities with that can be used in the classroom.

The college class that is offered is usually related directly to the meeting but this year it will be on Intervention Practices. Some of our members have chosen to addend this class but not to sign up for credit. Everyone is welcome to stay and participate. We’ve learned much together and have made many friends at the same time because our meetings are very low key and low stress.
