Frequently Asked Questions from Students and Parents
Why would I want to attend the Young Author Conference?

This is a great opportunity to see what other kids your age are writing about. You also get to share your writing with a small group of your peers. That is only the beginning of your terrific day. You will be able to listen to a professional author tell you about how they became an author, and give you hints that can help you in your writing. You will have the chance to talk with the author and get his/her autograph in your very own copy of the book. Not only that, but if you haven’t been to a college campus before, here’s your chance!

How many other students will be attending the conference?

There are usually around 400 students from schools all over the area.

May I bring another adult with me to the conference?

Yes, but there is an additional $9.00 fee for each additional adult.

May I bring along a brother or sister?

This is a day for you to spend quality time with your parent(s). We hope other arrangements can be made for your brothers and sisters the day of the conference, so you can enjoy this time alone without any distractions.

Will I be able to purchase books by the authors?

Yes! Many books will be available to purchase that day. You will even get the chance to have the author sign your book(s)!

Where does my parent go while I am sharing my book with my peers?

During the time you are in your sharing session, your parent(s) has the opportunity to attend a motivational presentation on parenting young readers and writers. This is always a hit with parents!

Will there be any food to eat?

You bet! Rolls, cookies, muffins, juice and coffee.

What if we can’t find the right building on the University campus?

Frequently Asked Questions from Contact Persons/Teachers
Why do the students have to pay to participate in the Young Author Conference?

The money paid by the students goes towards the cost of the conference facilities, mailings, guest authors and door prizes.

How much does it cost per student?

$9.00 is the cost per student. An additional parent or teacher is $9.00 and can be paid the day of the conference.

Whom do we send the check to?

Send the check (no PO's please) to:

        Cathy Maringer
        1453 W. Point Road
        La Crescent, MN 55947

Things have been really busy at school. Why can’t we send in our student names after the deadline?

Volunteers are in charge of putting together this conference. All volunteers have full time teaching positions as well. These deadlines are necessary to get the correct materials to the appropriate committee members for them to do their part in the process. There is a strict deadline for the booklets to get sent to the printers and be able to get them distributed in time for the conference. Missed deadlines mean missed opportunities for your students. The registration site will not be available after the deadline.

Is there anything I need to tell teachers ahead of time?

Be sure to remind your teachers that each child needs his/her book on the day of the conference. Many times students assume that the teacher will bring the book to the conference.

What if I can’t find enough people to facilitate the sharing sessions?

In order for the success of the conference, we need reliable volunteers to facilitate a small group of students. If you are unable to find your required quota, talk with parent groups or your principal. He/she may have that day free, or may have other suggestions. You may also try college students who are in the teaching field. They can use this experience on a resume. Without enough volunteers, unfortunately, your students are not allowed to attend.

My school wants to participate in the Young Author Conference and we have not received information. What should I do?

Before November contact Theresa Payne TheresaP@tomah.k12.wi.us. You will then be sent information regarding the conference.
