The Nuclear Power of the English Language: the darkness and the light of teaching reading

with Daniel Bernstrom

Join us as we learn with Daniel Bernstrom, picture book author and English instructor (Children’s Literature, College Writing, and Developmental English) at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. Daniel’s fifth book, A Bear, a Bee, and a Honey Tree, was released November 1st.

The teacher of English offers her student a gift. What is that gift? Well, English. Yes, English is one of the worst languages in the world! It's lawless, awkward, messy, tangled, defiant, dangerous, and hopeless. Yet, this cobbled-together language gives us an almost endless repository of words to probe the darkness of the mind and heart. Its twisted machinations allow us to conceptualize possibilities, ideas, and dreams that were once closed off by ancient language structures. Even its faults reveal that the imperfect can be true and good and beautiful. It serves as the reader's great mirror, reflecting what she is and what is possible. It reveals that she, like her language, though sometimes lawless and awkward and messy and tangled and defiant and dangerous and hopeless, can glory this world. Do you see? English is the incomparable gift we offer our students, a nuclear-powered reactor capable of turning the darkness to light and filling the world with beauty and wonder!
